I remember you, athletic, strong, and kind. You were a good team member on the football Yellow Jackets. Rest in Peace, friend.

Walter L. Waechter, Jr.

How do I describe the greeting he had for me?  He'd call me by the nickname he gave me and, in our younger days, it would include a good knuckle rub on my head.  Ouch!  As time went by, I considered that a hug.

Walter was a smart, friendly and unique person.  John and I appreciated his kindness and loyal friendship that began at Monnig.  The friendship is everlasting.

Walter was bigger than life. I first met him playing B-team football in the 10th grade. He was a halfback, if I remember correctly. He was nice, good-looking, and had a great sense of humor. He could really make me laugh! He had lots of fun walking through the halls, and was the only guy that I ever saw make walking around, wearing a slide-rule on his belt, look cool!

He was smart, a good athlete, and, as a matter of fact, the only guy, our age or younger, to ever beat me in a 100 yard dash! ( It only happened once, but it was what it was. ) He beat me fair and square.

In '69, I made a fool of myself, at Walter's expense, at Paula Perrone's debutante party. Jim Cozby and I were there, at Shady Oaks Country Club, and  ran into Walter. He was wearing the latest style, a coat and tie, with a white belt and shoes. We were mercyless at making fun of him. He got pissed at us and walked away. It was the only time I ever saw him rattled. Later, I realized how juvenile that had been, and I never forgot it. I sincerely hope he did...

So long, Walter. I salute you for a life well lived and send my most sincere condolances to your wife and family.

And may you rest in peace.
